AuthorChat with Blue Stour & Anita Cox

Before finding her true passion of writing, Anita Cox’s life could possibly be said to have been quiet and ever-changing. After several different attempts at employment and dreaming, that’s all changed.

Some of the roles Cox has played in her life have been only in her mind. Others have been trial-and-error processes of moving on. She’s been an astronaut, Spider (Wo)man, princess, Aqua (Wo)man, marine biologist, business person, legal secretary, car salesperson, and even the wife of “Lucifer.”

“I wanted to be a marine biologist – you know, because dolphins,” the remarried mother of four children–two step–said. “Then, in high school I sucked at biology and nearly failed chemistry. I went to college to get my degree in Travel and Hospitality Management. I continued my education in business through Indiana Wesleyan because I still had no idea what the f*ck I wanted to do.”

That’s until she started writing.

Deep-down, it appears that Cox always knew she wanted to be an author. She’s spent her entire youth and young adult life as a creative person. After acting out various roles, see above, she took to putting the roles into word; now that’s creative.

“When I started writing, I found my passion; I found me,” Cox said.  “That is what I want to do when I grow up.”

Currently, she writes mystery, suspense, paranormal fiction, and crime fiction. Under her pen name, Anita Cox, she writes erotica. Cox created the name so she could publish erotica and not confuse her fans. Whatever genre she is writing, rest assured that the dedicated author always gives 100% for her readers.

“When I write, I pour my blood, sweat, tears, time, and money into the novels,” the Indiana native said about her personal writing process. “I’ve received bad reviews before; it makes me feel like I failed a fan.  But, then I get on with it.  Granny used to say, ‘You can be the tastiest, juiciest green apple in the world.  Not everyone likes green apples, though.’”

That’s some very useful knowledge passed on by her nana; did she know her grandbaby was going to be an author?

Today, making Grandma proud, undoubtedly, Cox has learned a more appropriate way to deal with a negative review–“cuss and move on.”

Meanwhile, the woman who’s won blogger awards for her writing skills still says that a reader’s individual compliment is the biggest thrill for a writer.
Flattery from her readers is immeasurable, according to Cox. No matter how much of a struggle writing seems at times, it is something that she has no plans of stopping, ever.

“This is me; this is who I am,” she said with enthusiasm. “I will always write. I’ve had to take other jobs when royalties were down, but I’ll do this until I’m too senile to do it any longer.”

Additionally, Cox wanted to pass some advice onto the newer, struggling authors. After all, she was there, too. In her eyes, there is no other profession where fellow employees are so supportive.

“If you don’t have thick skin, don’t publish; it’s a dog-eat-dog world. On the other hand, if you’re strong and determined, the writing community is the most helpful and supportive you’ll ever encounter. Ask authors to join; the water’s warm, and the vodka’s cold,” the heavy-metal lover, i.e., Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Soundgarden, offered before announcing—surprisingly–a favorite artist.

“J. K. Rowling.–Sh*t your pants, didn’t you?– Why? Because whether or not you’re into down-on-your-luck, pre-pubescent, teenage-wizard angst, Rowling embodies our dreams: for our books to go viral, for us to go from rags to riches (like her) . . . and to get the recognition that a hard working author deserves.”

The erotica enthusiast who spends 2-9 hours per-day writing, “depending if the husband and kids leave me the hell alone,” summed up our interview with a hilarious comment I’d be lacking if I didn’t share. When asked if she won ten-million dollars, what would she buy, only one word was needed.

“Boobs!”

Cox’s creative words and humor are conveyed in her first erotica series, Dirty White Candy; the first book was released almost three weeks ago. Information about the series and other facts and sales concerning the writer from a portion of Indiana that “can’t be found with GPS,” can be found with the following links:

“Candy, the main character, really takes charge of her sexuality,” Cox expressed about her first erotica release. “She also learns the importance of communicating with your partner; that’s what I want.  If you want your nips tweaked or a butt plug, just say so.  Take control of your sex life and the joy you feel from it. Don’t be afraid to live out loud. The time for women to fear their sexuality is long gone;  erotica has become more mainstream. They can strap on that leather bustier and wear it with pride.”

Finally, how does she want to be remembered when she closes the keyboard a final time?

“That b*tch went out with a bang.”

AuthorChat with Blue Stour & Atty Eve 3/13/14

If it weren’t for depression, Atty Eve may be a dancer on Broadway. Fortunately, she’s turned into a published author. Broadway’s loss is becoming literature’s gain.

“I could have been a star,” Eve said. “I got depressed and stopped taking my dance classes, though. I used to want to play BeBe Benson in A Chorus Line on Broadway.”

Image

Born and raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Eve went a route completely different than the author path she’s on, now. After high school, she joined the Air Force, becoming a weapons specialist. She even took to the air on more than one occasion in The Force. She flew upside down, in circles, and buzzed Panama Beach. However, it was when she straightened out that she found it hard to keep her cookies down.

When she actually decided to write, it was—oddly enough–a dream that inspired her.

“I had a dream,” the wife and mother of two boys with the exact same birthday, three years apart, said. “It was about a role-playing game, so as I was writing out the background instructions of the game, a novel came out.”

Today, Eve finds herself writing all genres under different names. However, Atty Eve strictly writes thrillers.

Thus far, she says the biggest compliment possible she has been paid was by a dedicated reader. The fan told her that she was so emotionally attached to Eve’s characters that two weeks after finishing the book, she had to read it, again.

The Colorado native wrote a young-adult series and signed with her first publisher; it was a big deal. She felt she was on her way, as an author.

Unfortunately, after the publisher suddenly died, Eve was distraught. Feeling as if she had crashed and burned, she even stopped writing for years.

It wasn’t until recently that she bounced back. My Beautiful Suicide is her first work, since.

Admittedly, she jumped off of the writing wagon when adversity struck. However, she couldn’t stay away; the fictitious characters wouldn’t let her. Eve offered her advice to new writers who may be struggling.

“Is it a hobby or a lifestyle?” the author who said Moses should be a more recognizable writer added. “If you’re a real writer then the voices in your head won’t shut up, and there is no ‘jumping off.’ Even if you do, they’ll drag you back in.”

They sure did her.

Back on track, the choir and chamber music lover talked about how much she invests in her craft these days. She prefers to write 6-8 hours per-day, unless she’s working; then, it drops to 1-2 hours, daily.

Without even knowing anything about Eve, the book cover for My Beautiful Suicide pulled me to her work; I had to learn more. Other readers are more-than welcome to learn, share, and—even—stalk Eve by the following methods:

Goodreads:  https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18658192-my-beautiful-suicide

Eve hopes her writing to leave an impression that readers can’t just walk away and forget. The minor league baseball fan strives for more comments like her favorite, mentioned earlier.

“I want them, weeks later, to have the thought, ‘I have to pray for someone because I’m worried about them.’ Then, they remember they were only thinking about my characters and get mad that they were so emotionally attached.”

AuthorChat with Blue Stour & Ken Haramiru 3/6/14

Author Ken Haramiru had three goals in life. As a youngster, he planned to pursue one as a career. Either he was going to be a combat officer, an IT Director, or an author. Today, he finds himself performing not one, but the dedicated worker is thriving in two roles..

Image

“The dot-com boom seduced me out of college in 2000, and I was fortunate to establish my career at a literal rock star dot-com,” Haramiru said. “I really feel bad for college students now, though – they’re all fighting for a handful of entry-level positions that haven’t been sent overseas.  If I could tell every college student one thing right now it would be to focus on side projects and marketable skills before, during, and after college. College tries to prepare you for the workforce, but it’s once you get into the workforce that you learn how to really do your job.”

Haramiru is concentrating on his primary career. However, he is also flourishing with his career-in-words. Secretly, he uses a trio of names. The author writes under Ken Haramiru for erotica, a second name for erotic fantasy, and a third name for mainstream action and sci-fi stories. That undisclosed third name is the one he admits his family will know.

“I wanted to be a sci-fi author ever since I was a kid, and even wrote some novellas when I was a teenager,” the literotica writer added. “Over the years, my inner writer grew increasingly despondent and frustrated. A few years ago, I tried writing a sex scene to resolve the block, and it worked.  The result was a complete story. . . . just not one I could show my family.  I eventually realized that just because I couldn’t show it to my family, that didn’t mean it wasn’t a complete story.”

He says the writer within him would have been shocked; in horror, even. However, his inner-Man Ho smiled proudly. A year later, he has published ten erotica novellas, “which have been downloaded hundreds-of-thousands of times.”

Haramiru has been a busy-bee, pumping out reads in the past year. In churning out so much work, many writers would be worried about reviews. According to Haramiru, though, they’re just part of the job, good or bad. He offered a very logical explanation for erotica, even “literotica,” writers.

“In our field, you can’t sweat reviews,” he pointed out. “Literotica has a wonderful explanation of ‘Not-My-Kink syndrome. Unfortunately, most reviewers fail to understand that everyone’s kinks are different.  In the end, the only review which matters is that your repeat buyers come back for more.  Every repeat sale represents one person saying, ‘I care more about reading this guy’s stuff than I do about keeping an extra $3.’  When you put that in perspective, ratings really stop mattering so much.”

The funniest thing Haramiru told me was regarding his reviews. It was a comment someone flatteringly told him about a book he wrote.

“Damn you for writing that.  I read it on my lunch break at work, and I hate being that girl who masturbates in the bathroom.”

Oddly, the writer prefers certain music when he’s writing, which he ideally likes to spend 2-4 hours per-day doing. His iPod is loaded with angry German music; that music is reserved for coding and social media interactions.  Wagner and Tchikovsky are his plot-writing musicians. Then, when he writes erotica, it’s strictly . . . country music—“seriously.”

“Modern country is the most intensely sexual music around”, he explained.”Almost every song is about meeting a gorgeous woman and making her your own.  Other genres focus on one-night stands, but country is about settling in for a lifetime of great sex.”

Haramiru has a few choices to contact him or check out his books.

AuthorChat with Blue Stour & Eve Rabi 3/1/14

Author Eve Rabi comes from The Land Down Under, “where women glow and men plunder.” Being one-of-seven children in her familyImage,

, the romance-writing South Africa-native wasn’t originally planning to be an author. One of her teachers even told her that she should be a TV reporter because she was such a confident speaker.  Another was at the opposite end of the spectrum, telling her if she kept “up this type of behavior you’ll be in jail, soon.”

Rabi veered away from both scenarios. The mother of two has definitely backed her claim that she is an all-out dreamer. It’s something in which she takes a lot of pride. Being a trained nurse and midwife, she left the field to pursue her . . . dream.

“Seriously, I’m a dreamer and whatever I’ve dreamed, I’ve achieved,” the outdoorsy, extreme sports lover said. “So these days I dream big; I’m not afraid to take chances and my strength is that I’m quite fearless–My weakness is also that I’m quite fearless. So, when I decided on a whim that I wanted to make a change, career-wise, I just did it. Writing has been my best career move, ever.”

Rabi told her husband, whom she is now divorcing, about a story that she read, which involved a U.S. soldier in the hands of Iraqi militants. The female soldier fell in love with one of her captors who eventually helped her escape. The two started a steamy affair, and she returned home with a big secret. The only problem was that the soldier was already married—to a U.S. Police Commissioner.

Rabi’s “soon-to-be ex” was extremely interested in the story and wanted to know more. She couldn’t believe that he was so interested in such a story.

Then, the dance-a-holic, who once taught Latin dancing, told him that it wasn’t a story plucked from the daily news, at all. In fact, it was an idea she had been toying with in hopes of writing the book. The very next day, he bought her a laptop and recording device, and he ordered her to write; hence, the author was born.

Rabi, who said she writes an average of four hours per-day, now, would wake up at 3:00 a.m. and write until 6:00 a.m. when she had to get the kids ready for school. She wrote everyday until her first book was published in 2012.  Since then, she’s published a staggering twenty-one books.

“It was hard being creative with two kids, a home and a business,” said the writer who claims to completely “give a rat’s *ss,” about negative comments, “but I now write full time. So I’m really grateful with the way my life turned out.”

To her, now, stopping the creative juices would be like not breathing. Writing has become something she has to do.

“Never once in my life did I feel like giving up on writing,” Rabi added. “Writing is my life. When I get up in the morning, I have to write for at least an hour or I feel like I haven’t had my morning coffee.”

“I have two books I plan to release late-April/early-May,” the woman with a wide-ranging variety of 1,200 songs on her iPod said. ”I’m loving the stories and I have a sneaky feeling, my readers will love them, too.”

P.S.  Mrs. Rabi, I have to ask for all of us back in the States. Will you now tell us how to make a Vegemite Sandwich?

AuthorChat with Blue Stour & Julie Morgan 2/28/14

If you’ve been following AuthorChat, we hope you find it fascinating like we do when we uncover how writers become authors. We’ve seen several scenarios describing different author routes. However, Julie Morgan gives us a new, unique, and never-to-be-heard-again trek. (I think I can guarantee that.)

Image

“As a child, I wanted to be a (wait for it, wait for it) mermaid and live in the water,” Morgan admitted. “Then, when I realized my make-believe wouldn’t happen,  I just wanted to live in Florida. . . . Here I am.”

The computer science degree owner from Everest College has always enjoyed writing her thoughts. In fact, she’s always been a writer and reader. However, it wasn’t until June of 2012, when she decided to publish her work. Subsequently, Morgan talked a lot about the frustrating aspects of being published.

“I think we’ve ALL said ‘screw this!’ but the voices/characters continue to come back. If (writers are) on the edge of jumping, take a step back and look at the bigger picture,” the nine-year wife and mother of a daughter said. “Don’t force it. Get the creative juices flowing again and sit back. . . . Then, allow the voices to speak to you, again. If all else fails, sit on the book for a while and consider starting a new one. Sometimes taking a break from it is all that’s needed.”

Thus far, that process is working wonders for the Texas native. Morgan has kicked off her published writing career with a series, Chronicles of the Fallen. The debut work, Fallen, is available now. The follow-up, Redemption, and second in the series, will be available in just two weeks.

The die-hard Dallas Cowboys’ fan said she spends at least an hour each-day writing. Sometimes, she smiled, she gets an entire afternoon or evening to work. In addition, since the paranormal romance author is in the published author category, she constantly deals with those author ego boosts or eternal downers, a.k.a. reviews.

“As an indie author–now with a small press–we live off of our reviews” said the music lover from grunge to country. “I appreciate them, even the one-star. Constructive criticism helps us grow and build ourselves. The other side is where the reviewer is actually bashing the author; I don’t stand for that. I ignore the hate and move on. Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there like this.”

Morgan can be reached the following ways:

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/juliemorganbook

website: www.juliemorganbooks.com

Twitter: @JulieMorganBook

email: juliemorganbooks@gmail.com

Even after readers are finished with one of her books, Morgan hopes they’re already thinking about the upcoming story.

“I’d like to hope they’re thinking about what may be coming next for the characters in the stories,” she added.

Not a bad feedback philosophy for the author who once only dreamed of living under the sea, under the sea. (There’s a song in there somewhere; I KNOW it. 🙂  )

AuthorChat with Blue Stour & Stevie MacFarlane 2/25/14

Growing up in a divorced family, Stevie MacFarlane lived with her mother, three older sisters, and grandparents in the family home, in central-New York. Being the youngest, she admittedly enjoyed all of the luxuries that go with being the most spoiled child.

As she aged, MacFarlane wanted to be a nurse, teacher, writer, or “a million other things.” The one thing that she wanted to be more than any other was a mother. At the age of twenty-eight and five children later, she had fulfilled that need. Then, she decided it was time; at that point, she enrolled in college.

“I did it a little backwards,” the author of Domestic Discipline/Romantic Spanking Fiction said about her decision to have children and then go to college before pursuing her writing career. “I think of my writing now as erotica, but if you look at what’s available and acceptable in today’s market, my writing is pretty mild.  I am working on a paranormal romance so I’ll have to wait and see where the characters take me.”

Image

Since her flourishing writing career began, she has published seven books. It’s a difficult chore to write one or two books. However, to publish seven? That’s an accomplishment that comes with peaks and valleys the author admits.

“It’s (writing) not an easy job, and anyone who thinks it is better think again,” MacFarlane stressed. “There are times I’m convinced that what I’ve written is total crap and other times when I think I’m a genius; of course, neither is true.  It’s depressing, exhilarating, frustrating, rewarding and I firmly believe that all writers are just a little crazy.  So be crazy!  Write what you feel, write from the heart. Most of all cut yourself some slack and have patience.  Everything is a WIP, (work in progress) including you.”

Even though the die-hard Buffalo Bills fan said social media is not her strongsuit, she still makes use of the sites, offering her readers plenty of choices. The following is a list of her works thus far, along with the contact and learn-more options:

Changing Her Mind

Little White Lies

The O’Malley Brides

The Not-So-Lucky Bridget O’Malley (a St. Patrick’s Day novella)

The following are a series, Sugar Babies, Inc.

Book One, A Sweet and Sassy Match

Book Two, Match Me If You Dare

Book Three, Matched For Keeps

Currently, she is working on a fourth book in the series with a release date  unknown.

MacFarlane’s books are written for the purpose of entertaining her readers. She writes strong and independent, yet loving and caring men. Her female characters tend to also be strong and independent, yet they choose to surrender to their men—sensing a theme?

Lastly, Stevie admitted that she tries to write what she likes to read, “feel-good stories.” According to the one-time spoiled brat, life is always hard, so “curl up with one of my books and escape; that’s my motto.”

AuthorChat with Blue Stour & Lisa Paul 2/21/14

Sometimes, there are certain ways of speaking to sound professional. Then, there are other ways of speaking to just be you. Essentially, it’s kind-of like the informal/formal transformation.

The public records will show that Lisa Paul’s venture into a career of authoring was in her blood. After all, her grandmother was a published poet. Also, Nana had a complete manuscript that was never published. According to the granddaughter and mother of two, writing has always been her way of “purging, bleeding, breathing, dreaming, without judgment or fear.”

Then, there’s the other reason that Paul was sucked into the writing game; it sounds a lot more realistic, less climactic, and lifelike.

While attending the University of Pittsburgh, Paul was faced with the inevitable decision of choosing a major. Even though she would go on to earn a Bachelor’s of Social Work, she failed to realize that it was writing which influenced her decision.

“When it came time to declare a major, I was torn between psychology and social work,” the life-time Pennsylvanian said. “I ended up choosing social work because I loved writing papers and essays; all of the exams were written. In psych, they were multiple choice; I stink at multiple choice. I chose social work because I could write.”

Based on the two scenarios, if anyone asks, Paul became an author because it was in her blood. Incidentally, though, she did go on to earn her M.A. in Social Work, from Temple University.

Having learned that, Paul becoming an author shouldn’t be a surprise. Even as a child, she considered the option of being an author. In fact, she’ll admit that she’s written all of her life. In her youthful years, she had aspirations of one day being a few different things–all of which included her being in the spotlight–writing was still toward the top of that list.

“I wanted to be a famous singer, an actress, or a writer–but a famous writer like Danielle Steele,” the erotic roman author said. “I wanted people to know exactly who I was and want to be around me ALL THE TIME. . . . Now, as a mom, I covet the quiet time.”

Though she’s writing only one genre, she was quick to point out that she is not limiting herself in the future. In the meantime, she’s happily learning the ropes and not about to slow down.

“I’ve never thought of doing anything else, but getting exposure is and has been a complete nightmare for me; I can’t seem to figure it out,” said the author who began as strictly a blogger and book reviewer. “The reviews of both of my books are really, really good, even great. My advice to those who are thinking about jumping (off the Writing Wagon) is believe in yourself; YOU have to. If you don’t, no-one else will take you seriously.”

Thankfully, Paul spoke pretty passionately about her experience in writing book reviews. According to the huge Philadelphia Phillies fan (C’mon; it’s only because her dad was a Phillies die-hard or else I might not have been able to write the article (Blue humor; Blue humor)) she would never leave a negative review. If she didn’t care for a book, she’d simply email the author, explain the problems she felt it had, and post nothing. If she posted anything, it was a sincere appreciation. Under no circumstances would she leave the thing authors should loathe, the dreaded “fake review.”

“I can’t tell you how often I have purchased a book based on the 150 five-star reviews and been left to scratch my head wondering what the heck those people were thinking,” Paul said. “That being said, I see no reason for people to be so damn cruel in leaving nasty reviews either. I can’t tell you the hurtful and hateful things I have seen written in reviews; people can be truly horrible. Honestly, one can say, ‘I didn’t like this book’ or ‘This book needs editing,’ without demeaning the author and the author’s intellect.”

The dedicated book reviewer-turned-author now spends hours writing—or sometimes none. Paul admitted when it’s “flowing,” she can write about twelve hours, nonstop. However, there are other times when she can go for weeks without writing a word. Basically, the lyrics-girl who loves any type of music which possesses strong lyrics says that it just depends on when the mood strikes.

Her writing, thus far, has yielded two books in her Charistown Series. The first, Thursday Nights and the second, Storm Front, are available on amazon.com. The third in the series which will run at least four books long, Breaking to Breathe, is slated for a June, 2014, release.

AuthorChat with Blue Stour & G.E. Stills 2/18/14

Rarely does it happen that children actually become what they want to be when they reach adulthood. Even in the cases that do, many regret. Before becoming an author, G.E. Stills fulfilled his childhood ambition.  However, it wasn’t writing, nor was it what he had envisioned.

“I wanted to be a soldier. My dad was a war movie buff, so in my childhood I watched a lot of war movies,” the owner of a technical automotive degree said. “At that time, more of the movies had a WWII setting and I idolized the heroes. I became a soldier, but after two tours in Viet Nam and being told my next duty station would be in Shima, Alaska, I changed my mind about being a career soldier.”

Through the years, Stills, a lover of various types of music, has dabbled in writing but mostly for his own enjoyment. Family and career got in the way of writing for the thirty-year husband, father of two, and grandfather of two. However, in 2008, Stills starting writing with the intent of being published.

“I primarily write erotic romance books in the paranormal and science fiction genres,” Stills added. “I have also written contemporary, science fiction and paranormal stories that are non-erotic. All of my stories have a happily-ever-after ending.”

Now that Stills is full-steam ahead, there are nothing but happy endings in his future.

“Sometimes I get frustrated–most of us (authors) do–but the thought of not writing is terrible to contemplate,” said the writer who doesn’t set limits on writing each day because he just lets it flow. “I can’t picture my life without writing in it.  If it is in your blood you can’t quit. Write on.”

“Write on,” he has. His distinctive writing ability is displayed on his amazon.com page. Following his flourishing author career, the Nebraska native wants readers to remember his work one way.

“(I want to be perceived) as an author who enjoyed creating worlds and characters for his readers,” the long-time New Mexico resident added. “My books are written for entertainment. I hope they’ve been able to dive into a world of adventure and enjoyment I’ve created.”
